Things to do - general

Singapore is a city in Southeast Asia. Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, since independence it has become one of the world’s most prosperous countries and boasts the world’s busiest port.

Combining the skyscrapers and subways of a modern, affluent city with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian influences and a tropical climate, with tasty food, good shopping and a vibrant night-life scene, this Garden City makes a great stopover or springboard into the region.

Singapore is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world for a lot of reasons. One of which is the less stringent entry requirements.

Sports & nature

Singaporeans participate in a wide variety of sports for recreation as well as for competition. Popular sports include Supercar Motorsports, football, basketball, cricket, rugby union, swimming, badminton, and cycling. Most people live in public residential areas that often provide amenities including swimming pools, outdoor basketball courts as well as indoor sport centres which provide facilities for badminton, squash, table tennis, american football, gymnastics, indoor basketball and volleyball, among others. Singapore is a city nestled amid lush greenery found along roadside and parks.Close to the city centre is the Singapore Botanic Gardens, spanning an area of 74 hectares. With a heritage of more than 150 years, the Gardens has been popular with both residents and overseas visitors. Adding to the verdant landscape are the many parks, park connectors, nature reserves, heritage roads and heritage trees found across Singapore which provide for a unique experience of the island’s natural beauty. The Park Connector Network is an island-wide network of linear open spaces around major residential areas, linking up parks and nature sites in Singapore, allowing everyone to enjoy the splendour of these green spaces.Mature trees are a natural heritage of Singapore and serve as important green landmarks for this amazing island state. Designated heritage trees and heritage roads will give you a meaningful encounter with Singapore’s natural heritage and foster a greater appreciation of the nation’s biodiversity and history. Besides the greenery traditionally found on along our roads and in our parks and nature reserves, we now also have skyrise greenery - green roofs and vertical greenery that extend and almost look like gardens in the sky.Sports and nature image

Culture and history info

The written history of Singapore dates back to the third century. Evidence suggest a significant trading settlement existed in Singapore during the 14th century. In the late 14th century, Singapura was under the rule of Parameswara until he was expelled by the Majapahit or the Siamese. It then came under the Malacca Sultanate and then the Johor Sultanate. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819, when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles negotiated a treaty whereby Johor allowed the British to found a trading port on the island. Singapore prides itself on being a multi-racial country, and has a diverse culture despite its small size. The largest group are the Chinese, who form about 75% of the population.Culture and history image
